When someone types "dental clinic near me" or "visa consultancy Şişli" on their phone, Google first shows a map and a few businesses. A business that isn't in that short list is almost invisible for that search, however good its website. This guide covers the 12 things to do in your Google Business Profile to stand out on Google Maps, and the mistakes that put your profile at risk.

What Is Google Maps SEO?

Google Maps SEO (local SEO) is the work of getting your business into the map results for location-based searches. At its centre is the free Google Business Profile; two things support it: reviews and your website.

How Does Google Rank Map Results?

According to Google's own explanation, local results are decided by three factors:

  • Relevance: how well does your profile match the search? Complete, detailed information lets Google match you with the right searches.
  • Distance: how close is your business to the person searching? This is the one factor outside your control.
  • Prominence: how well known is your business? Google says review count, positive ratings and websites linking to your business affect this.

Google also states clearly that local ranking can't be improved by paying or by requesting it. So be careful with anyone who says "we guarantee first place on the map".

12-Point Google Business Profile Checklist

An unverified profile hasn't proven to Google that you represent the business. Google says verified businesses are more likely to appear in search results.

The primary category is the strongest signal for which searches Google matches you with. "Dental clinic", "dentist" or "implant specialist"? Check which category the competitors above you on the map use.

List every service you offer separately: for an education consultancy, for example, "university applications in Italy", "student visa consultancy" and "scholarship consultancy".

Adding "best", a city name or a keyword to the business name may seem to work short term, but it breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended. Use whatever is on your sign.

If customers come to your office, enter the full address. If you go to customers, hide the address and define a service area. Virtual office addresses with no staff are not suitable for a profile.

Enter special hours for holidays and public holidays in advance. A visitor who arrives while you're closed may not come back.

Business name, address and phone must match exactly on your profile, website, social media and directory sites. Different phone numbers or old addresses blur which information Google should trust.

Real images of the team, the premises, the entrance and the service itself. Instead of stock photos, images that let someone at your door say "I'm in the right place".

The best time is right after the service: a short WhatsApp message two hours after the appointment with your profile's review link. Don't leave it to people; add it as an automatic step in your CRM.

Google says replying to reviews shows you value customer feedback and can help your business stand out. Reply to negative reviews briefly and with a solution, not defensively; healthcare businesses must not share patient information.

Add a tracking parameter (UTM) to the website link on your profile, so you can see how many visitors and leads come from the map. Add LocalBusiness structured data to your website.

The Business Profile performance report shows search views, phone calls, direction requests and website clicks. Put them next to your monthly number of appointments.

5 Mistakes That Put Your Profile at Risk

  • Adding keywords or a city name to the business name.
  • Having fake reviews written or buying reviews.
  • Offering discounts, gifts or prize draws in exchange for reviews.
  • Sending the review link only to happy customers and filtering out unhappy ones.
  • Opening a profile with a virtual office or mailbox address that has no staff.

Follow Google's review policies when collecting reviews. For changes to advertising transparency in Turkey, see our article on the advertising rules from 1 August 2026 and the official regulation (in Turkish).

Tips for Clinics and Consultancies

  • If you have several branches, open a separate verified profile for each and a separate branch page on your website.
  • If you have international patients or clients, send the review request in their language; reviews in different languages also build trust in international searches.
  • Until organic results settle, you can link your profile to Google ads and add sponsored visibility on the map.
