Last year we audited 47 Meta ad accounts. The same 7 mistakes repeated in all of them. Below you'll find the why and how we fix each in our own accounts.
1. Targeting Too Narrow
Meta now performs better with broad targeting. Replacing detailed targeting + lookalikes + interest stacks with broad audience + strong creative drops CPL 30-50% in most accounts.
2. Launching With Too Few Creatives
2-3 creatives per ad set is not enough. Meta's algorithm wants to choose from at least 6-8 to find a winner. Otherwise you hit creative fatigue fast.
- Launch with at least 6 creatives per ad set
- Add 2 new creatives weekly, kill the bottom 2
- Test the hook (first 3 seconds) in 4 versions
3. Mixing Up CBO and ABO
New account? Start with ABO to learn which audiences work. Move to CBO once mature (50+ weekly conversions). Reverse order = no learnings.
4. Pixel + CAPI Misconfigured
Since iOS 14.5, Pixel alone is not enough. Without Conversion API you lose half the attribution. Aim for Event Match Quality 8+.
fb.track('Lead', { email: hashedEmail, phone: hashedPhone, external_id: userId });5. Optimizing the Wrong Event
Don't optimize for PageView or AddToCart. Optimize for what makes you money: Lead, Purchase, or a custom qualified_lead event.
6. Not Testing Creatives Enough
Test new hooks, formats and angles weekly. Static, video, carousel, UGC — run them in parallel.
On Meta, what wins is not a creative, it's a creative production system.
7. Ignoring Frequency
Above 3.5 frequency, CPM spikes and CTR drops. Watch it weekly or you'll burn the account without noticing.
Summary
Fixing these 7 takes 2-3 weeks. Result: 30-60% more leads on the same budget. Want us to audit your account? Book a strategy session.
